1. Announcement

I was on the verge of writing a big long post about how I feel mired in my novel, and I’m doubting everything about the point of the entire process, and that no one cares about long-form fiction anymore, particularly if it’s written about gay stuff and all of this boo-hoo-hoo bullcrap, and as if to tell me to shut the fuck up, I got an email reminding me of something: a piece of fiction I wrote will be featured in the upcoming issue of the Canadian literary magazine Grain.

For you American and non-literary types, Grain is pretty well-known in Canadian publishing circles, and often gets nominated for National Magazine Awards, and the stories in Grain often appear in the Best Canadian Short Stories and are nominated for the Journey Prize - the most prestigious short fiction award in Canada. So I’m pretty happy about this! The Winter issue is off to the printers, and it will come out late January/early February.

My pessimistic/worry-wart side tells me that they are probably just lying to me and that I’m going to be very embarrassed when my story doesn’t appear, and this doesn’t mean that anyone cares about long-form fiction, in fact, Grain’s piddling sales and subscription list seems to prove that no one cares at all, but right now Optimistic Me is dancing down the street and thinking I should buy a Cinnabon tonight.
