1. Hot Chip - “Flutes”

    The last lines in this excellent song - “One day you might realize/that you might need to open your eyes” - are cliches, both on dance floors and everywhere else. But I like them still, because I’ve been there, wanting someone to see the hurt he’s caused me (often on dance floors), or just for him to admit to being a jerk. “Just open your eyes! Stop being you!” And it’s selfish, of course. No one thinks they need to change; we never tell ourselves to “open our eyes.” Our minds are perfectly open universes - it’s everyone else who can’t see. Hence, it’s pathos. Those eyes - the other person’s eyes - will never open. It’s ours that will slowly shift away to find other people to look at and complain about.
